The use of antioxidants is the most effective means to protect the organism against cellular damage caused by oxidative stress. In this context, organotellurides have been described as promising antioxidant agents for decades. Herein, a series of N-functionalized organotellurium compounds has been tested as antioxidant and presented remarkable activities by three different in vitro chemical assays. They were able to reduce DPPH radical with IC50 values ranging from 5.08 to 19.20?µg?mL?1, and some of them also reduced ABTS+ radical and TPTZ-Fe3+ complex in ABTS+ and FRAP assays, respectively. Initial structure-activity relationship discloses that the nature of N-substituent strongly influenced both activity and cytotoxicity of the studied compounds. Furthermore, radical scavenging activities of N-functionalized organotellurides have been compared with those of their selenilated congeners, demonstrating that the presence of tellurium atom has an essential role in antioxidant activity. 相似文献

Significant technological advances have accelerated high-throughput proteomics to the automated generation of millions of tandem mass spectra on a daily basis. In such a setup, the desire for greater sequence coverage combines with standard experimental procedures to commonly yield multiple tandem mass spectra from overlapping peptides-typical observations include peptides differing by one or two terminal amino acids and spectra from modified and unmodified variants of the same peptides. In a departure from the traditional spectrum identification algorithms that analyze each tandem mass spectrum in isolation, spectral networks define a new computational approach that instead finds and simultaneously interprets sets of spectra from overlapping peptides. In shotgun protein sequencing, spectral networks capitalize on the redundant sequence information in the aligned spectra to deliver the longest and most accurate de novo sequences ever reported for ion trap data. Also, by combining spectra from multiple modified and unmodified variants of the same peptides, spectral networks are able to bypass the dominant guess/confirm approach to the identification of posttranslational modifications and alternatively discover modifications and highly modified peptides directly from experimental data. Globally, seagrass ecosystems are considered major blue carbon sinks and thus indirect contributors to climate change mitigation. Quantitative estimates and multi-scale appraisals of sources that underlie long-term storage of sedimentary carbon are vital for understanding coastal carbon dynamics. Across a tropical–subtropical coastal continuum in the Western Indian Ocean, we estimated organic (Corg) and inorganic (Ccarb) carbon stocks in seagrass sediment. Quantified levels and variability of the two carbon stocks were evaluated with regard to the relative importance of environmental attributes in terms of plant–sediment properties and landscape configuration. The explored seagrass habitats encompassed low to moderate levels of sedimentary Corg (ranging from 0.20 to 1.44% on average depending on species- and site-specific variability) but higher than unvegetated areas (ranging from 0.09 to 0.33% depending on site-specific variability), suggesting that some of the seagrass areas (at tropical Zanzibar in particular) are potentially important as carbon sinks. The amount of sedimentary inorganic carbon as carbonate (Ccarb) clearly corresponded to Corg levels, and as carbonates may represent a carbon source, this could diminish the strength of seagrass sediments as carbon sinks in the region. Partial least squares modelling indicated that variations in sedimentary Corg and Ccarb stocks in seagrass habitats were primarily predicted by sediment density (indicating a negative relationship with the content of carbon stocks) and landscape configuration (indicating a positive effect of seagrass meadow area, relative to the area of other major coastal habitats, on carbon stocks), while seagrass structural complexity also contributed, though to a lesser extent, to model performance. The findings suggest that accurate carbon sink assessments require an understanding of plant–sediment processes as well as better knowledge of how sedimentary carbon dynamics are driven by cross-habitat links and sink–source relationships in a scale-dependent landscape context, which should be a priority for carbon sink conservation. 相似文献

This study evaluated the influence of Azospirillum lipoferum on the growth of Myracroduon urundeuva (Anacardiaceae) plants under drought stress, by means of biometric, physical–chemical and biochemical parameters. The association of A. lipoferum with the roots of the plants provided increases of 30% root length, 50% root dry weight, 34% shoot dry weight and 10% soluble protein content. The inoculated plants still maintained 5% higher leaf water potential than those not inoculated and lower membrane damage. Furthermore, the inoculated plants shown less leaf fall and dark green leaves, confirmed by maintenance of the highest levels of chlorophyl a, b and total. On the other hand, superoxide dismutase activity was significantly lower in the inoculated plants, possibly due to the induction of a non-enzymatic protective feature. In this way, the inoculation of PGPR in M. urundeuva can be an alternative for the production of plants that are more tolerant to drought stress. 相似文献

Hunting is a common and popular pastime in Portugal. Hunted animals are, generally, for human consumption as meat or local products that are consumed without cooking, increasing the risk of zoonotic transmission of several infectious agents. The present study intended to characterize HEV infection in hunted wild boars (species Sus scrofa) from two regions of Portugal in order to estimate its importance as reservoir for zoonotic spread of HEV to humans, and its possible implication in public health. Markers for both past and/or ongoing HEV infection were evaluated in serum, bile and stool samples of 29 wild boars. The presence of specific HEV antibodies as marker of past infection was evaluated in serum samples, while active HEV infection was evaluated through the detection of HEV genome in bile and stool samples. HEV specific antibodies were detected in 14% of the studied animals, while none of the tested bile or stool samples revealed detectable HEV genome. Despite no active HEV infection was demonstrated in the hunted animals included in the present study, serological analysis revealed the endemicity of HEV infection in Portuguese wild boars from the studied regions, corroborating its possible role as zoonotic reservoir of such virus. The proved endemicity of HEV infection among wild boars further support the importance of including HEV in national and regional surveillance programs for wild animal diseases, as well as to the awareness for thorough cook all wild boar products and to the education of occupationally exposed people in order to prevent HEV infection. 相似文献

Biting midges in the genus Culicoides act as vectors of arboviruses throughout the world and as vectors of filariasis in Latin America, the Caribbean, and parts of Africa. Although Culicoides spp. are currently not considered to be vectors of Leishmania protozoa, the high abundance of biting midges in areas with active cutaneous leishmaniasis transmission points to the possibility of Culicoides infection by these pathogens. We used PCR to test captured Culicoides species for natural infection with Leishmania spp. We tested 450 Culicoides females, divided into 30 pools of 15 individuals each, as follows: nine pools of C. foxi (135 specimens), seven pools of C. filariferus (105), seven pools of C. insignis (105), five pools of C. ignacioi (75), and two pools of C. flavivenula (30). PCR confirmed the presence of Leishmania braziliensis DNA in C. ignacioi (0.14%), C. insignis (0.14%), and C. foxi (0.11); and Le. amazonensis DNA in C. filariferus (0.14%) and C. flavivenula (0.50%). We conclude that these Culicoides species can be naturally infected, but vector competence and transmission capability must be confirmed in future studies. Our results warrant further investigation into the role of these biting midge species in the leishmaniasis epidemiological cycle. 相似文献

There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that peripheral-type benzodiazepine receptors (PTBRs) and their endogenous ligands are implicated in the pathogenesis of end-organ failure in chronic liver disease. Portal-systemic encephalopathy, a major neuropsychiatric complication associated with chronic liver disease, results in activation of brain PTBR and probably in peripheral organs. In order to address these issues, PTBR mRNA was measured using semi-quantitative RT-PCR in extracts of cerebral cortex, kidney and testis of rats four weeks after end-to-side portacaval anastomosis and sham-operation (controls). Densities of PTBR sites were measured concomitantly by in vitro receptor binding using the selective PTBR ligand [3H]PK11195. Portacaval shunting resulted in a 2 to 3-fold increase in expression of PTBR in brain and kidney and a 37% reduction in expression in testis. Densities of [3H]PK11195 sites changed in parallel with the alterations of gene expression. These findings suggest that selective alterations of PTBR expression are implicated in the pathogenesis of peripheral tissue hypertrophy (kidney) and/or atrophy (testis) which accompanies portal-systemic shunting in chronic liver failure. In brain, activation of PTBR could result in an increase in the production of neurosteroids with potent inhibitory action in the CNS, which could contribute to the pathogenesis of portal-systemic encephalopathy. 相似文献

Production of Physalis peruviana L. has gained prominence in Northeastern Brazil. However, salinity limits the crop development in the Brazilian semiarid. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate the application of Acadian® biostimulant as mitigant of the deleterious effects of salinity on growth and gas exchange of P. peruviana plants. The experiment was combining different electrical conductivity of irrigation water (0.50, 1.23, 3.00, 4.44, and 5.50 dS m−1) and biostimulant doses (0.00, 1.45, 5.00, 8.55, and 10.00 mL L−1). The main variables evaluated were plant height, stem diameter, number of leaves, root length, leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf area ratio, absolute and relative growth rate for plant height, and gas exchange. Experimental results showed that an increase in electrical conductivity of irrigation water had negatively affected the growth components and gas exchange in P. peruviana. Also, the application of seaweed-based biostimulant improves the photosynthetic capacity (43.3%), reduces transpiration rate (26.5%) and water loss by this process, further it attenuated the deleterious effects of salinity on specific leaf area, leaf area ratio, and stomatal conductance. To further elucidate the effectiveness of biostimulant application as a mitigant of salt stress, research aimed at the biochemical and enzyme activities of the plant''s antioxidant system should be conducted to better understand this process. 相似文献

The aim of this review was to summarize the current knowledge regarding the effects of aeromonosis on fish oxidative status. The bibliographic survey was carried out on the research platforms: Scopus and Science Direct. The keywords ‘Aeromonas’, ‘fish’ and ‘oxidative status’ (or ‘oxidative stress’, ‘oxidative damage’ and similar terms) were used. Scientific papers and short communications were considered. Studies involving fish aeromonosis and enzymatic or non-enzymatic markers of oxidative status were selected. The results of antioxidant enzymes activities/expressions after infection lack consistency, suggesting that these findings should be interpreted with caution. Most of the analysed studies pointed to an increase in reactive oxygen species, malondialdehyde and protein carbonylation levels, indicating possible oxidative damage caused by the infection. Thus, these three biomarkers are excellent indicators of oxidative stress during infection. Regarding respiratory burst activity, several studies have indicated increased activity, but other studies have indicated unchanged activity after infection. Nitric oxide levels also increased after infection in most studies. Therefore, it is suggested that the fish’s immune system tries to fight a bacterial infection by releasing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. 相似文献
